The Joys and Pain of Simple Photography

I received a phone call yesterday from a former colleague, who having spotted a typo on one of my blog posts. Had decided to do me a turn of kindness and let me know. Which I appreciated very much. I think it was also a good excuse to give me a call and chat about how the Industry is going. I was praised for my uncompromising commitment to photography; though I assured my friend I had compromised a lot in my time. As we discussed jobs from the past and diminishing fees, I was told about a former client of years of theirs, who had eventually asked them if they could; "just set up the lights" so they could do the shots themselves. We weren't using face-time but I'm sure my eyes rolling into the back of my head were clearly visible at the other end. Or maybe it was a groan I let slip, certainly not a gasp.. "I made it look too simple" my colleague continued. And indeed I think they had. There is a point in every good photographers life; when no matter what you are looking at; they have made what they did look simple, too simple. And people start to believe it really was. Sometimes, what they have done actually was simple - it's just it has taken years of experience to be able to see, feel, and deliver that simplicity. I like this shot below. It's a branding shot from the end of an eCommerce/Lookbook shoot. And it is simplicity itself. Just stand the model in the light (*details below). When did I learn how to pull off simplicity? To simply ask the model, any model to just slink back against the wall, and then for me to pull off the shot? It wasn't always that way! After all it's one of the most ridiculous things in the world, this wall leaning pose.. and in the wrong hands looks as unnatural as it really is.
Good model, check. Fabulous garments and styling - check. Team - check. Years of experience.. Check check check!
A branding fashion shot made in natural light from an eCommerce fashion shoot. Photographed in Sydney by Kent Johnson for BUthelabel.
I like this shot. And it is really, truly, a natural shot. I know enough about what is happening with the light and the camera on a technical front, so it does not interfere with the subject and the mood of the model. I've got lovely garments that I have a feeling for along with the scene before my eyes. And I have a cooperative team, and a wonderful experienced and beautiful Danish model, whom if I remember correctly; I even asked If I could just toss her hair a little; to lift the shot (sometimes its easier to do it yourself).. So I like this shot - but even we ended up overthinking it; bringing in a large light to soften the shadow on the next look. But that was OK as it gave us a nice variation on the shadow theme which was/is a key feature of the branding shots over the plain white background lookbook pictures. I often say to people that simple is the most difficult of all - it certainly almost always involves a lot more than the eye sees and what is perceived. And that's good; because the power of simplicity is that it just looks beautiful when you see it, and when you see it, you don't have to think about anything else at all.

*Don't overexpose the highlights, sun on white linen, black silk top; don't let shadow fall on wrong part of face; is shadow too dark(?) keep the feeling carefree and natural. Which after 3 hours of continuous modelling, shooting and outfit changes is no small thing - here we are, come on everyone, it's nearly done and  it's almost time to go home.

Tween to Teen Fashion - Look-book & Branding Photography

They say to never work with children or animals; and yet, many of the most fun experiences in life and memorable pictures are with kids or pets, or even kids with pets! Well I have photographed fashion lingerie and luxury swimwear with poodles, blogger vivalaViv with Holly the very cute and fluffy Pomeranian, but I had never until this fashion assignment worked with kids. Well portraits yes but certainly not with youngsters as fashion models. In fact it was the first time on a photoshoot for all the girls except Charlie, (left just below and most outgoing) for whom I had made a casting portfolio for, photographing on location. So here we were, two teens and two tweens; two mums about 12 or so outfits and a four hour studio shoot. You can read more about the shoot from the designers perspective here on their blog post called Lights Camera Vision! (Thanks for the kind words).

The shoot went smoothly, the girls had a great time and from a technical/performance point of view, there was very little to do by way of post processing due to the careful set up for the white background, studio lighting arrangement. As a result, these pictures below are completely un-retouched, the RAW files have been put through a simple automated adjustment to bring up the background a wee tad more, and I find the RAW converted files are always a bit crisper too! And for these girls I think a half day on set was just right, the energy and focus stayed mostly on track and we were 'done' before anyone got bored. So that's my first 'kids' fashion shoot done and dusted, and now I am looking forward to my kids fashion assignment. Looking to photograph your Teen kids or toddlers fashion range? My Behind The Scenes Beauty Video for Glow By Beca.

I love great stills photography, after all I am a stills photographer. I also like classic cinema, well made films, and occasionally I like a behind the scenes (BTS) video. But not often. To be honest I often find them very boring and in many ways seem to undermine the advertising message being made on the shoot via the stills photography. Jealous? I wish! I think a good BTS should help grow the anticipation and excitement around a range, a product, a launch. Not let the cat right out of the bag or steal away the mystery. Because when you want something, it is more than just a product, it's a journey, desire , love, hope!!! Many many things; and certainly not just a group of people standing around taking pictures... So I was very happy to put together this video which is made up of stills from the shoot and footage shot with my old G10 camera which I was able to have around my neck the whole time we were working on the stills. This gave me the ability to shoot brief clips from my point of view without breaking the tempo of our photo shoot or getting in my own way! Hope you like it; Part 2 out now as well..

Shooting Fashion in Studio or on Location, What's best for You?

Studio vs Location, what works best for your fashion or accessories..Studio vs Location Photographing Fashion. Headshots, Fashion Photography branding images.
The first question to ask yourself is..
are the pictures going to define your Brand or are they marketing collateral and just what does that mean? By way of explanation, I was a guest at a luxury jewellery store last week for VFNO, and that store as part of a successful international company had both branding pictures and marketing collateral pictures, they had a big beautiful picture book and boxes of postcards too.. the branding pictures were of Danish super model Helena Christensen in moody black and white, and yes she is wearing the jewellery but the pictures are all about the style of the brand first, the immaculately styled jewellery second, the pictures are about who wears the brand. Along with these beautiful pictures of Helena are the clean and clear colour pictures of the jewellery against a white background, standard sales shots, well done, showing you exactly what you are buying, marketing collateral images to work alongside the heart pumping branding images to close the sale.. I'll take that one!

Of course this being a bigger company who take their marketing very seriously they have not stopped there, they have also made luxurious still life pictures of selected pieces from their ranges, reinforcing the beauty of the jewellery pieces, objects of desire, in and of themselves. Scroll down to read on.

Swimwear comparison photography. Photographing Fashion, Studio or on Location?
The branding pictures are always about key pieces.
It does not matter if it is jewellery, handbags, dresses, swimwear, shoes or jeans. The flagship pieces from the range get the special treatment as part of a campaign. The Campaign shots define the Brand and who is the brands consumer. Confuse your message or do a half-assed job (excuse my French) and you will confuse your customers, and confused customers shop elsewhere. The message you want to tell about your label is Who you are and Who wears your Brand. If this is what you need pictures to do - you want Branding Shots!
Studio vs Location Photographing Fashion Sophisticated swimwear comparison photography. Photographing Fashion, Studio or on Location? Photographing Fashion, Studio or on Location?
If all you need to do is show your garments..
your items; if you are thinking about direct-sales pictures then you are most likely thinking about marketing collateral images; or, Look Book pictures as they are most popularly referred to. Of course there is no such thing as "if all you need"! Every picture is important as they are all part of the buyers journey, part of the path that leads to a sale. These pictures which are often considered secondary or less important images.. they are not; need to be well lit and well focused and well framed to show details of your product as clearly and cleanly as possible. With the growth of e-commerce and web-stores this kind of image has put a LOT of pressure on retailers and designers to show all the range in pictures for the first time ever as the clothing racks move out of the high street to on-line. As a result of that pressure many have 'dropped the ball' or failed to gain any web traction at all. Get these pictures wrong and your product won't be walking out the door, you will be losing sales and maybe even closing your doors, on-line is that competitive.
Bridal fashion in the studio and on location. Photographing Fashion, Studio or on Location?

So how do you decide which way to go to make the most of the budget you have for your fashion photography and make the right decision, Studio vs Location about where to shoot and how to shoot it? These four points should help you make the right choice.

  1. Great Look Book shots can make for very good Branding shots too. If your budget is limited, spending a little extra time on two or three key outfits, perhaps with additional styling can give you the hot shots you need to sell your Brand. You will need the RIGHT MODEL and a photographer that can deliver the quality you will need to pull off this miracle feat. Experience can make all the difference here so investing in a good, experienced, professional photographer is money invested now, for the future sales that will grow your business.
  2. Indoor location VS Studio Photographing Fashion, Studio or on Location?

  3. Branding shots made in the studio will require a lot more than booking a photographer the studio and a model. To pull off studio branding you will need to design and style a set and this of course costs money! While locations can cost money too, many locations can be photographed for free, you may need a pre-plan for elaborate Hair and Make-Up (H&MU) but if you plan well with your photographer location can be the perfect choice for branding shots on a budget. Of course if budget is not an issue, well Hello, the world is your oyster!
  4. Studio vs Location Photographing Fashion. High fashion branding photography in the studio vs Accessories branding on location. Photographing Fashion, Studio or on Location?

  5. You can shoot Look Book on location but you need to be very organised! Even if you have a ton of equipment (lots do and use it badly) you need to take account of the sun. The sun changes all through the day making it a big call to create a consistent Look Book look.. If your range is small it can be done, if the range is large and the budget small, book a studio; just trust me on this one.
  6. Creative studio photography and creative location. Photographing Fashion, Studio or on Location?

  7. Sophistication is cheaper in the studio! A LOT if not most of the greatest dresses ever made from the greatest fashion houses of the world.. have been photographed against a simple white or black or 'canvas' background. This is one of the great traditions of Fashion Photography. Of course not every studio picture shot in this 'style' cuts it. You still need a photographer who knows their stuff; great photography, great lighting, a fabulous model (a little luck won't hurt), the right attitude. Just remember, camping is the enemy of sophistication, what was hot in 1959 is completely camp in 2014!High fashion photographed in the studio compared with high fashion photographed on location. Photographing Fashion, Studio or on Location?
Everything in photography takes time, and money. A budget of $300 won't buy you dinner at a top restaurant but it will by you dinner at a McDonald's; where do you see your buyers wearing your Brand? Festivals cost hundreds of dollars to attend; are your pictures going to grab the attention of your customers? Every photo shoot requires some sort of budget but if you are starting out its quite likely smaller rather than larger, though hopefully not too small to do the job at hand. What's right for you, Studio or Location, or maybe both? When it comes to shooting fashion there is always a lot to decide; hopefully this blog post answers many of your questions. Mind you it is a lot to take on-board so don't hesitate to ask me about any queries you might have in the comments below. And yes, do contact me about photographing your fashion or accessories range, I would love to be involved with your fashion project.

Vintage Style Dresses and Hats - Beautifully Feminine Studio Fashion Photography.

I love vintage fashion just as I love the classic old black and white movies with their great style and elegance. And when I am looking at clothing on web-sites, I not-only like to see great well-crafted shots of the clothing, I like the pictures to be beautiful too; the kind of picture that does not just show the clothing, but also contains some of the energy and philosophy of the fashion label as well! Admittedly that level of information in a picture is usually the role of the branding and advertising shots; but with everyones look book on-line these days it is absolutely essential to keep the label's branding message strong; after all, on the internet there is no such thing as "just a look book"!

On this shoot we went with two different backgrounds to promote different aspects of the beautifully feminine 40's 50's inspired fashion range, the shots were to be used for both the web-shop and brand promotion. I think we successfully captured the vibrancy and vintage feel of the label while showing the clothes very well indeed.

One of the things I love about this sort of photo shoot is that it allows me to work with all my camera and studio lighting skills and my directing skills, bringing out the best from the models and the garments along with the right feeling for the fashion range; with the added benefit of next to no post processing or retouching required. As online selling continues to become more and more competitive, the style, quality and impact of the the pictures becomes more important then ever before.

Photographing a Fashion Jewellery Campaign with the Fuji X-Pro1

I love working with clients that have a clear vision for their brand and from our very first phone contact and meeting I knew that minds behind new Fashion Jewellery label OUMIRA were very switched on; understood their target market and the kind of eye catching, fashion branding images that would grab a customers attention. As the premier sales point for Oumira is an online shop we decided to go with classic white background, lit and photographed in the studio - great for online retailing and very popular with PR's and Fashion Editors for ease of insertion in magazine 'What's Hot' fashion pages too. The brief was for great energy from the model; and this only comes from great energy between the model and the photographer, to be combined with fabulous lighting,  put it all together and capture those special moments.

Story continues below...

I decide that it was time to put the Fujfim X-Pro1 that I have been using for Street Fashion Sydney through its paces on a full scale fashion shoot. There was no doubt in my mind that the Fuji's X-Trans Sensor with its incredible fine-detail resolution together with the optical quality of the XF35mmF1.4 R lens would be perfect for this style of shoot. Lighting was provided with vintage STROBE equipment for its unique light quality (its like moving up a camera format); two swimming pool lights banked together; each the equivalent of  40 individual heads, to provide something a little different for the powerful "Terry Richardson" style we were thinking about.. The STROBE was perfect for bringing out the detail of the jewellery while still being flattering to the model and was perfect match for the high resolution of the Fuji's unique X-Trans sensor.  Continues below...

We worked through seven 'looks' on the day, all styled by the Oumira team ranging from 'Gothic Biker Chic' all in black leather, 'knuckle duster' ring clutch handbag, black beads & silver skull necklace.  A 'Modern Savage' or was it a Hippy look..  with fur and feathers and more Gothic skulls. Fun and Funky styles with On-Trend Neons and Blue and Pink  fashion jewellery stories too.

All the selected files from this shoot were RAW converted using the Fuji/Silkypix RAW File Converter EX. Using the Silkypix RAW converter is always a bit trickier than most RAW converters as it tends not to respect the in-camera settings, meaning you need to find the best settings pretty much from scratch! Fortunately on a shoot using the same light source throughout the struggle is worth it as the converted RAW files do deliver a higher quality to start the retouching process with.

Something I always find interesting is that while the files tend to look great right out of the camera, they are never as good as they can be. For me this means a three stage 'photo finishing' and retouching process to bring out the maximum Pop and Impact the image can provide. This is particularly important part of the Photography "Value Chain" when using images to sell products - something I see being overlooked again and again when it comes to businesses using pictures to sell products online.

Finishing each picture requires RAW conversion including tonal and colour adjustment as well as sharpening and in Silkypix the level of demosaicing. The new file is then loaded into Photoshop for retouching, skin fixes, local colour adjustment, airbrushing,  and any little fixes or 'tricks' like flipping a feather, (final frame below) that you can't make anywhere else.. I then add layers for final colour adjustment, sharpening, contrast and saturation.

Pros & Cons of shooting Fashion with the Fujifim X-Pro1

Pros
  • A very high percentage of Sharp and In-Focus shots = more keepers to choose from.
  • Exceptional file quality straight from the camera.
  • Great detailed files from RAW - but see the Con below..
  • Ability to shoot with any of the three viewfinder options & I used all three on this shoot.
  • No mirror 'black-out'; you see the shot you are making.
  • Everyone loves the X-Pro1, and the client probably doesn't own one (yet)..
Cons
  • You need to remove the tripod plate to open the Card/Battery door.
  • Viewfinder not as large as with a DSLR, I look over the top of the camera if it's a problem.
  • RAW conversion tends to be time consuming - frustrating - impossible under some circumstances..
  • Write speeds not as fast as DSLR - can slow down playback viewing.
  • Minor shutter lag, though not enough to cause me at least to miss any shots..
For me the decision to use the Fuji X-Pro1 on this shoot was definitely the right call. The Camera and the XF35mmF1.4 R were a perfect combination for the contemporary fashion look and feel we were after from the shoot. The image quality is superb and the cameras ability to focus accurately and quickly (in that order) allowed me to focus more on what was happening in front of the camera; the shots, than worrying if the shots were really in focus or not. And as I wrote in my X-Pro1 review on Street Fashion Sydney; this is a camera that enhances your photography instead of hindering it.  Love it!
