Tween to Teen Fashion - Look-book & Branding Photography

They say to never work with children or animals; and yet, many of the most fun experiences in life and memorable pictures are with kids or pets, or even kids with pets! Well I have photographed fashion lingerie and luxury swimwear with poodles, blogger vivalaViv with Holly the very cute and fluffy Pomeranian, but I had never until this fashion assignment worked with kids. Well portraits yes but certainly not with youngsters as fashion models. In fact it was the first time on a photoshoot for all the girls except Charlie, (left just below and most outgoing) for whom I had made a casting portfolio for, photographing on location. So here we were, two teens and two tweens; two mums about 12 or so outfits and a four hour studio shoot. The shoot went smoothly, the girls had a great time and from a technical/performance point of view, there was very little to do by way of post processing due to the careful set up for the white background, studio lighting arrangement. As a result, these pictures below are completely un-retouched, the RAW files have been put through a simple automated adjustment to bring up the background a wee tad more, and I find the RAW converted files are always a bit crisper too! And for these girls I think a half day on set was just right, the energy and focus stayed mostly on track and we were 'done' before anyone got bored. So that's my first 'kids' fashion shoot done and dusted, and now I am looking forward to my kids fashion assignment. Looking to photograph your Teen kids or toddlers fashion range? Hannah - Five Versatile Looks - Modelling Portfolio Photographed in the Studio.

It may seem a little odd, but it's not unusual for me to not see the person or a picture of the person I have been booked to photograph until they walk into the studio for their portfolio or portrait shoot. And that's quite fine with me. Sometimes however, as in the case of Hannah's portfolio shoot there were quite a few pictures for to me to see as Hannah has already been modelling for some years. It was Hannah's mum who booked the shoot and sent me through some of her shots, along with the information that they were about a year or so old and she needed some new ones, ones with more edge to them. So what I knew from seeing those pictures was that I would be photographing a lovely, fair skinned and blue eyed young woman in those fast-changing and oh so important mid to late teen years.

And as I do before most of my portfolio shoots, Hannah and I spoke a few days before about what she was bringing, and what looks and styles she was thinking of for the shoot. As we style from the models own wardrobe it is important to make sure we have covered all the bases with shirts, dresses, shoes accessories etc. and better too much than too little.

On the day of the shoot, after laying out the clothing, creating the first looks and establishing a creative direction for the pictures and the Hair and Make-Up. I then take a simple 'Digital' or 'Polaroid', a completely natural picture of the model like the one below which was also as it happens taken in natural light. its then time to start on the hair and make-up for our first look which typically takes about an hour. We always start with the simpler, more natural looks and then build on those with ever more elaborate H&MU changes. For this shoot we started with sporty look, moved into a natural sophisticated look, the comp card headshot;  went a bit biker/rock chick with the black jeans and white tee, then onto a high fashion swimwear look finishing with a sleek contemporary look in the orange long sleeve knit top, black skirt.


All in all our fashion and modelling journey took us about four hours and created just under 400 files to choose from; with a lot of  good shots or 'keepers' as we say. Of course what we are after is not just the good shots but the best of the best! Here is my selection from this shoot and there could easily have been many more. In The Studio - Modelling Portfolio with Beauty and Lingerie.

A modelling portfolio for Natalia including lifestyle beauty, lingerie and some 'alternative-fashion' twists. We started in with some completely natural shots in the beautiful soft lemon coloured dress Natalia arrived in. I loved her freckles, dark skin, hair and eyes and wanted to make sure we had Natalia as Natalia before we really started-in on our shoot. Other than some lovely portraits shots, there was an added bonus to this approach as it helped Natalia overcome any nervousness she had been feeling about having her picture taken.

I then began with a clean high-key lifestyle beauty shot with simple styling; classic white singlet top and cut-off denim shorts. Next with a few adjustments to the hair and make-up was the white lingerie and then onto our final outfit; smokey eyes, darker lips,  a little black dress and an 'Alt-Fashion' look and feel. The whole including hair and make-up by Cynthia taking around four hours in all for this Getting Started - Modelling Portfolio Package; resulting in a beautiful abundance of great shots.

Vintage Style Dresses and Hats - Beautifully Feminine Studio Fashion Photography.

I love vintage fashion just as I love the classic old black and white movies with their great style and elegance. And when I am looking at clothing on web-sites, I not-only like to see great well-crafted shots of the clothing, I like the pictures to be beautiful too; the kind of picture that does not just show the clothing, but also contains some of the energy and philosophy of the fashion label as well! Admittedly that level of information in a picture is usually the role of the branding and advertising shots; but with everyones look book on-line these days it is absolutely essential to keep the label's branding message strong; after all, on the internet there is no such thing as "just a look book"!

On this shoot we went with two different backgrounds to promote different aspects of the beautifully feminine 40's 50's inspired fashion range, the shots were to be used for both the web-shop and brand promotion. I think we successfully captured the vibrancy and vintage feel of the label while showing the clothes very well indeed.

One of the things I love about this sort of photo shoot is that it allows me to work with all my camera and studio lighting skills and my directing skills, bringing out the best from the models and the garments along with the right feeling for the fashion range; with the added benefit of next to no post processing or retouching required. As online selling continues to become more and more competitive, the style, quality and impact of the the pictures becomes more important then ever before.

Harlette Swim - Launches in Paris - Photographed in Sydney..

Its great to be part of a new range launch; this time it's Harlette Swim from the International Harlette Lingerie label for whom I have been shooting for for a little over a year. It's also nice to be shooting swimwear again and to be doing it in the studio where I often say is where swimwear should always be shot!  Well maybe not always but it is perfect for the very stylish Harlette SWIM range, very time effective; and the client and I are really happy with the results. Here are the first images from the new range, just released for the Paris launch; all photographed and retouched by myself including the flat lay which shows the details of this range extremely well. Hope you like the shots too - many more are on their way..

 It was also great working with two models again and the interesting dynamics you get from the interplay between them; not to mention working with the Harlette mascot of two 'model' Poodles as well! The fabulous black bikini below is a bit of a sneak peek from the new range, of what is yet to come - stay tuned!
