Personal Work - Urban landscape Brisbane (& a shopping trolley too..)

When I came back to photography after what I only half jokingly refer to as my ten year(ish) sabbatical from photography, I began by photographing the urban landscape. It was urban landscape photographs arranged as diptych and triptych images that were the subject of my first solo photography exhibition Three Roads Night.

Then a moody urban landscape diptych of single power poles was selected for inclusion in the prestigious Blake Prize in 2004; something I had dreamed of but never thought could happen! When I set up my Flickr account, (Flickr was the first true photo-sharing web 2.0 social networking platform; My Space was more for musicians & school kids..) it was to showcase my urban landscape style of images. And it was on Flickr that I also had my first experience of alienating my audience when I made a return to fashion and started showing fashion images as well as the urban landscapes and abstract imagery; the change (return?) didn't go down well with everyone. Now I think that not only has Flickr changed, a lot.. the people who do follow me over there are well aware of my photographic proclivities which extend to people and clothing as well as inanimate objects and the urban landscape. I enjoy all the forms of photography I work in and they cross over and inform one another, though not always in an explicit way. This shot was made last week at a shopping centre in Brisbane, on the way to my sisters.. When opportunity knocks, grab it with both hands.

Shot with my Fujifilm X-Pro1.

Men's Modelling Portfolio - Suits, Fitness and Fashion..

Fitness is the new fashion for men and women; and a suit.. well the styles change but suits are more in fashion that they been for a long time. But before taking a single picture; I talk with you, usually on the phone about what you are going to bring along to the shoot. The main thing that happens in this conversion is I get a feeling for the direction you want to go with modelling, and I make sure you are bringing enough gear for us to style the shoot. Something I have also been doing for quite a while now is to make you a set of  'agency digitals', pretty much as soon as you walk in the studio. Street clothes, some good daylight, tight shot, full length, side on.. the basic basics! These shots are your package bonus that you can email around as the 'snaps' everyone wants to see these days. Only these snaps are a little better.. That's the first three shots below! All these pictures are from the Pro Modelling Package which includes photographing 5 looks and a comp card, full details here.

Photographing Vivid Sydney 2015 - Like it was 1985!

Looking through my first series shots that I made of the coloured light sculptures and projections at the 2015 edition of Vivid Sydney on Tuesday night a question occurred to me; what would these pictures look like if I had taken them back in 1985?  I knew the answer immediately; Black and White! I would have gone to a coloured light show with my Nikon FM and I would have almost certainly photographed in Black and White. There are a couple of reasons for this. First and most importantly I love black and white! And back in 1985 I was obsessed with black and white photography as an art form and a complete way of seeing and revealing the world around me. The other reason is that colour film and processing was expensive! Really expensive if you were shooting professional transparency/slide film. Which is exactly what I would have used if I wanted colour pictures.

Of course too much colour can overpower a picture, muddy a scene, create clashes that detract. Very good black and white and very good colour photography are both difficult to achieve; but as most of us do like pretty colours.. I am still of the opinion that it is easier to make a passable colour picture than a passable one in black and white. Oh, and don't forget the iso issue, HP5 or TriX film was 400iso! Push it as far as you dare for soft pictures and golf ball sized grain. These pictures were all made with the Fujifilm X-Pro1 the XF18mmF2 R and tiny EF-X20 flash unit.

So here they are; all the colours of Vivid Sydney in glorious Black and White! Enjoy.

Personal Work - Photographing Vivid Sydney from 2012 to 2014.

On the 22nd of May 2015 Vivid Sydney is back and the lights will be on again. I first started going to and photographing the Vivid light shows in 2012. Initially to have something new to put up on my Street Fashion Sydney blog that would compliment my regular art & artists and street fashion at art shows posts. And it had been a little quiet.. I suppose I should admit that before heading down to the Quay and The Rocks to see Vivid for the first time I was thinking it would be very 'for the tourists'. Yes my attitude was completely stuck-up! And of course when I got down there it was not just a few tourist but a LOT of tourists and locals and a melee of cameras and tripods too. What I was not expecting was to get caught up in the excitement of photographing the art installations and the light shows like a newly re-born photographer. That year I made three special trips and I pulled out lenses (tripod) and filters for the Nikon; and techniques, not used for years to create my own photographic vision of Vivid Sydney 2012 - Here..

Come the 2013 edition of Vivid, and Street Fashion Sydney (SFS) had sponsorship from Fujifilm Australia and I was shooting for the blog exclusively with the Fujifilm X-Pro1. I decided to go Reportage style that year, with the 18 and 35 mm lenses and the little X-20 flash mounted on the camera. That was the year of pictures of the people much more than the art; and the year of umbrellas as it was raining even more so than 2012; though when it comes to light projections on the Sydney Opera House, it does not seem to matter how cold or wet. Nothing will keep the crowds away, and I was able to get some lovely shots of people doing what people do; when confronted with beautiful light shows and rain, rain, rain! Here.

By 2014 I am still very happily shooting SFS with the Fujifilm X-Pro1 but I also have an HTC ONE phone loaded with Instagram, Snapseed and VSCO; I can pull shots from the memory card of the Fuji onto the Phone and edit them right-there, right-then and I do! Well a couple anyway (as it's USB not Bluetooth or wireless) at the Lord Nelson Hotel over a pint of Nelsons ale.. But I have already posted to Instagram a shot from inside the Blue installation, Cellular Tessellation using a shot from the phone itself. I am well aware I have almost missed the Instagram boat but I am determined to catch up! #vividsydney  Actually so obsessed with the new social media, this is the first blog post of my shots of Vivid 2014.

I think this was my favourite work this year, LOL Mouths by Luke Hespanhol at Walsh Bay for Vivid Sydney 2014 SydneybyNight.
Maybe I can't read a map or maybe Vivid still can't credit works properly... This just near Parker's art store along with another piece that seems undocumented on the map. Corner of Argyle & Cambridge Street, The Rocks, Sydney. Maybe next year!
The interactive solar light sculpture, HiRAY, you pull on the ropes and it lights up in different colours and different ways..
I'm not sure if this light display is part of Vivid Sydney or just something going on in The Argyle, the screen in the top of the arch was displaying TRON as in the movie etc; so maybe yes maybe not.

Child Dancing- Pool by Jen Lewin, Vivid Sydney 2014. An interactive light pool for all ages, the light disks change colours with the movement of the group.

Curiously, although Vivid launched in 2009 with Brian Eno as part of the creative team; 2012 seems to have been the year it really kicked off, and I can't seem to find anything about the time span in between. So it could well be that I have been in the thick of it; most happily since the beginning(ish). And since you can see what pretty much everyone does at Vivid by checking out Instagram #VividSydney or the annual Flickr groups, one certainly gets a feeling for how one is doing photographing the show.

They say it's easy photographing a beautiful woman; she is already beautiful, you just need to push the button. But in an age of Digital Auto Everything, it is interesting to see how your pictures compare.. Vivid is a lot like a beautiful woman, but not everyone sees her or photographs her the same way. I am looking forward to the 2015 edition of Vivid Sydney!
