Talisker Whisky & Johnnie Walker Black Label - Social Media Marketing via Leo Burnett Australia.

About a month or so ago I was approached by Leo Burnett Australia to do some work on a social media marketing, father's day campaign for Johnnie Walker Black Label 12 year old Whisky and Talisker Single Malt 10 year old Whisky.
Talisker Whisky still life, jacket hat and product photographed in a Sydney Harbour Park, social media marketing and promotion.
For the two different brands I created two distinct sets of images for use on instagram, Facebook and for blogging; two different sets of images that were ultimately tied together by the use of a hat motif. For the Johnnie Walker shots I created a set of 'walking man' shadow pictures in a Film Noir style. A journey where the hat wearing 'shadow' discovers Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky.

For the Talisker Whisky shots I worked with the idea of a whisky by the sea playing with Talisker's island heritage by using sailing boat masts in the background of shots, taken on a sunny day in a Sydney Harbour park. The hat reappears along with a cord jacket, a picnic in the park, a still unseen man relaxing with a single glass of whisky, setting a perfect tone for this Father's Day promotion.

A thoroughly enjoyable project to work on with the added benefit of receiving some great whisky product to enjoy as well. All shot with the Fujifilm X-Pro1 camera.

A Fashion Editorial Without Any Fashion..

So that means I need some help. Because lets face it, you can't really have a fashion editorial or even a fashion test for that matter without having some fashion. This series stems from a few inspirations but it really all fell (mostly) into place when I saw Manning Cartell's Summer 2010/11 range while perusing the RAFW shows online about 10 days ago.

Suddeny I saw fashion that I knew I could work into the Marrickville Urban Landscape and do it right at night. Really I think the only time it can work is at night. But it wasn't just the MC range, a few days earlier I had been talking with my friend and mentor Brett Hilder and had been thinking about Brett's love of Tina Mondotti, Mexico and his own take on all that is beautiful.

The Shadow and The Wall, A Fashion Editorial Without Any Fashion.

I think the moody light and Hacienda, Art Deco, Breeze Block and re-made Federation architectural mash-up lends itself to a kind of David Lynch, Mullholland Drive mystery narrative. Film Noir, Hollywood glamour and the ingénue!

So to pull it all off I need some help. I need a stylist who can help pull it all together on the fashion front. Or some designers who have the garments that fit the bill. Or both. I think its a great project so rather than put it in a draw and wait... I am putting it out on the net, seeing what the great god Google can rustle up for me. So lets add some keywords. Fashion Stylist, Sydney, Editorial. Fashion Photography; and see if that helps. If you like the look of the shoot, please email me or give me a call. Lets do it.

Portraits and Headshots

What is the difference between a Portrait and a Headshot? Who gets a headshot and who gets a portrait? Is it just actors and models who get headshots? Should the shot be in classic black and white; colour; studio or location?

“If I want to look like a model or an actor can I get a headshot instead of a portrait too?”

Of course you can! A headshot is still a portrait but it’s usually a portrait photograph taken for a very specific purpose. For an model, actor or performer it’s a selling tool for their agent, just like actors models have composite, or ‘comp cards’ too. The comp card shows what someone looks like in a well lit and often in a fairly natural way. Actors may only have one shot on their card while models will have quite a few. The models comp will have their main headshot on the front and a collection of different shots on the back highlighting their different looks.

Of course Models are beautiful and Actors are handsome (or something like that); a good headshot or portrait should bring out your beauty or your handsomeness too. I have found very few subjects who did not look great in a well executed portrait or headshot. It seems to be all about making sure you are relaxed in front of the camera. As a photographer it seems I am lucky enough to possess the skills required to get most people quite relaxed and happy about being photographed most of the time.

Its quite exciting and rewarding when having done a portrait the sitter is presented with an image that matches their inner vision of themselves. Its not about turning someone into someone else its all about bring out their best. People photography is far more than camera technique it is also about how you work with people, the psychology of the shoot! In our myspace facebook world everyone wants to know what you look like so why not look as glamorous as a Model an Actor or even a little Rock and Roll. Why not look like a Star in shots that truly bring out your best.
