Space 1, 2 , 3 , 4...

I have been looking over a pile of shots I took back in 2006 prior to my return to shooting fashion. These are of the old Woolies carpark from Church St near the corner of King. At the time I was on a HUGE roll with serial photographs (or series if you prefer). I suppose I should dig out the originals and re-process them but, I still do love the rawness of these shots taken with my little silver brick the IXUS 330! I loved that camera.

Rebecca McGeoch, PR Portrait

A few portrait variations for Rebecca's PR package for her new label RM Cashmere. We shot these last week along with a few top secret shots of her next season range. Kaori worked her magic on the H&MU though working with Rebecca we really needed no magic at all!

Fashion in the Sand Dunes of Cronulla

What a lucky day for a 'Desert Dunes' fashion shoot, well it was a photo shoot for Love & luck so I suppose thats how it has to be! We had full sun from behind on the white sand with strong clouds in front of us on the horizon allowing for a lovely dramatic sky. Luck had not initially been on our side though as we had intended shooting this series of handbags, the 'Persia' range a week or so earlier but it had been too wet! We did not want a wet desert we wanted a dry dry 'lost in the desert' theme and I think you will agree it was worth the wait.

Although I was aware of the dunes down at Kurnell and Cronulla I had never shot there myself. So, a week before (we were going to shoot) we did a technical scout to find the perfect spots, check the light make sure everything would be just right on the day. The last shot on this page is really just a reminder shot I took on the day for a future shoot. There are no fences in the desert, or are there?  Click on the horizontal shots to view larger.

Marina - Studio Model Test

This was my last Model Test for 2010 shot between Christmas and New Years. I met Marina a few weeks ago at a friends, she hails from NYC & has been working in finance there but wants to give modelling another go, as she had done in her mid teens. Although now living in NY she is originally from Latvia of Russian background, ah that great Slavic bone structure! We put together a few looks, simple/casual to start off and then something a bit more sophisticated. I also had the new fabric background to work with. I have been after a coarse weave, textured background for a while and now we have have one!

I asked our Make Up artist Yenn to 'Go Crazy' for the final shots and we (yes I did have some input too) came up with a bold asymmetric look for the eyes which I really love. Thanks Yenn. 2010 was a blast & I am looking forward to making lots a great new work in 2011. Happy New Year everyone.

My Biggest Project in 2010 - SNO Artists Portrait Exhibition.

Was I think without a doubt my Solo Show SNAP at SNO in May this year. In a nutshell (my artist statement is below) SNAP was 40 large format Photographic Portraits of local and international artists taken at their openings over the previous four or so years. All the images were reprocessed from the original files for the show to make sure of the consistency of the prints which were done by the wonderful people at Photoking in Randwick.

The show (the first solo at SNO & show of objective work) was also aligned with the Head On Photo Festival and was very well attended. Thanks to everyone at SNO for their assistance with the exhibition & Billy Gruner for the title, Head On; and my parents for their much appreciated support. And of course thanks to everyone who made the trek to SNO for the exhibition, it would not have been such a wonderful time without everyone coming along.

I am not sure as to why it took me so long to blog about the show other than it has been a wonderfully busy year for my photography! I have put up a few shots from the show, the opening and some instillation shots below, all the Portraits from the exhibition can be seen HERE on Flickr.

SNAP at SNO

Artist Statement

Every artist regardless of their experience has a sense of anticipation surrounding the opening of their exhibition. SNAP the portrait exhibition of artists taken at their openings at SNO reflects this instant, that moment when the artist is with their art, themselves and a photographer looking at both. The portraits which are 'set up' during the openings are typically made in about 60 seconds.

My the earliest shot in the show is the silhouette series of Ruark Lewis in conversation taken at the closing show for the space SNO occupied immediately before moving to the Marrickville Road space in February 2006. The first portraits at the new gallery space at 175 Marrickville Rd were of Jan van der Ploeg and Helen Smith SNO 15, April 1 2006 with the collaborative work 'Magic Black, Baby Blue, Baby Doll 2006'.

Over the past four plus years Kent has managed to photograph more than 40 Artists at their SNO openings. SNAP showcases the best-of-the best of the SNO Portraits.
