Theatre Publicity Stills - Art For Arts Sake - Sydney

Last year I was commissioned by playwright and actor Sage Godrei to produce the publicity stills for her theatre piece Art For Arts Sake. Although I missed the production as I was overseas at the time I enjoyed being present for this rehearsal and then lighting and directing these shots. I often think of fashion photography as a kind of theatre, I think the two forms may be more closely related than people realise.

PR & Commercial Portraits - Let The Love Flow & Show

How long will your PR or commercial portrait last? Well that's a pretty good question that depends on a number of different things to answer. If you are in the public spotlight and your work is receiving a lot of media attention you will possibly want to create a new shot every six to twelve months. Portraits for the Annual Report or the commercial website should be updated once a year but we know some are changed every couple of years! Of course it will also depend on how much YOU have changed and the circumstances around you.

Most of my PR portrait shoots see me working on something like three looks; if you combine the variation I always have from each look that provides a reasonably large 'handful', great variety images to use over 12 to 24 months.

John Firth-Smith, Artist's Studio Portrait

I have been working on getting a portrait of John for a number of years now. So I was, to say the least, very happy when he commissioned me to shoot the catalogue portrait for his September 2011 show at John Buckley Gallery in Richmond. John had been kind enough to drop into my Artists Portraits show 'SNAP' at SNO in May 2010 and, I think that helped quite a lot in securing the commission as John mentioned to me on a number of occasions how much he enjoyed the show. He certainly understood that 'SNAP' was about the artist in their space at that tricky moment in time, The Opening!

The portrait has been used just inside the back cover as seen below. John also had me photograph a couple of the paintings he had changed a little between the official photography of the paintings and the catalogue deadline. While its had been a while since I have done art copy work those shots went according to plan and into the catalogue as well.

Head On 2011 Portrait Prize - Eugenia

Well I have always been more than happy to post some of my portraits here on my fashion page, after all why not, who doesn't enjoy a lovely portrait! And I am happy to announce that my editorial style portrait of artist & friend Eugenia has been shortlisted for 2011 Head On portrait show.

My Biggest Project in 2010 - SNO Artists Portrait Exhibition.

Was I think without a doubt my Solo Show SNAP at SNO in May this year. In a nutshell (my artist statement is below) SNAP was 40 large format Photographic Portraits of local and international artists taken at their openings over the previous four or so years. All the images were reprocessed from the original files for the show to make sure of the consistency of the prints which were done by the wonderful people at Photoking in Randwick.

The show (the first solo at SNO & show of objective work) was also aligned with the Head On Photo Festival and was very well attended. Thanks to everyone at SNO for their assistance with the exhibition & Billy Gruner for the title, Head On; and my parents for their much appreciated support. And of course thanks to everyone who made the trek to SNO for the exhibition, it would not have been such a wonderful time without everyone coming along.

I am not sure as to why it took me so long to blog about the show other than it has been a wonderfully busy year for my photography! I have put up a few shots from the show, the opening and some instillation shots below, all the Portraits from the exhibition can be seen HERE on Flickr.

SNAP at SNO

Artist Statement

Every artist regardless of their experience has a sense of anticipation surrounding the opening of their exhibition. SNAP the portrait exhibition of artists taken at their openings at SNO reflects this instant, that moment when the artist is with their art, themselves and a photographer looking at both. The portraits which are 'set up' during the openings are typically made in about 60 seconds.

My the earliest shot in the show is the silhouette series of Ruark Lewis in conversation taken at the closing show for the space SNO occupied immediately before moving to the Marrickville Road space in February 2006. The first portraits at the new gallery space at 175 Marrickville Rd were of Jan van der Ploeg and Helen Smith SNO 15, April 1 2006 with the collaborative work 'Magic Black, Baby Blue, Baby Doll 2006'.

Over the past four plus years Kent has managed to photograph more than 40 Artists at their SNO openings. SNAP showcases the best-of-the best of the SNO Portraits.
