How To Join Top Modelling Agencies with a Portfolio Photoshoot in Sydney

How do you become a model? How do you break into the Australian modelling industry? Great questions, lets find a few answers to getting you started. There are a few different approaches you can take to make it as a model, but we have found that regardless of anything else; a great professional modelling portfolio is going to give you the edge and the best chance to break into the fashion and modelling industry. Read on below

And here's the first reason. Model Agencies and Bookers are busy people. Yes that is 100% boring and 100% true! If you want to get their attention you need pictures that stand out too them - pictures that catch their attention in a business that is driven by pictures! That means the kind of picture they expect to see with something more - forget Instagram and the crazy creative stuff! - There will be plenty of time for that later - So why do you need straight-down-the-line pictures to get into a top model agency? Because they need clean, clear strong pictures to SEE you, YOU in capital letters with no guess work required. No one has time to guess what you look like. If they have to guess; they won't. It will just be,"next model" with good pictures that they can turn to. Your time will have already passed!!! Remember, even a Unicorn viewed from the wrong angle looks like a horses... You need to to look Unicorn-You from-the-front, at the very start, and exactly the right angle.

The  good news is my team and I have been making great looking portfolio pictures that get you unicorn noticed; for years! The kind of picture you will love and modelling agencies love too. And that is a very good thing. It is what you need. My team and I have helped a lot of attractive young people who have done photo sessions with portrait studios who do "model portfolio" pictures that were rejected. The pictures by the way were fine as portraits.. but not as model portfolio shots; and the agents agree, they are not the right stuff. What do they say, "we can't use these pictures." Portraits are not model portfolio pictures.

In today's world it's also important to put yourself out there on social media, with Instagram being the platform of choice. It is very competitive and a tough crowd so you may want to set up a modelling-only profile; so you can keep your private life private. Even if you want your IG page to look like it's your real world. There's more info, so scroll down and read on.

Next; how can we help you land a top modelling agency. By helping you be yourself. As the saying goes, "be yourself everyone else is taken!" And as true as that is, it's also helpful to work with a team that can bring out your unique qualities that can get you seen by the Modelling Industry. This is one reason we don't try to photograph you in just one hour! It takes time to make great pictures, to get to know you, your look, what makes you, you. And it's something that cannot be rushed. My portfolio shoots are from two to four hours long, I don't like to be rushed and neither should you. This is part of the approach to creating beautiful strong model portfolio pictures that get you noticed.

Of course - well maybe not of course if you don't already know. On of the biggest pictures you need for a modelling portfolio is the Headshot! The Headshot is the first hit; the hero or heroine of your comp card, your CV, your life as a model. And again, it is not a portrait! (I go into detail here)

Top Tips For Great Modelling Headshots

What is a Model Headshot and what makes it different to other pictures? The difference is what the picture is going to be used for. When you think about modelling, it's all about fashion photography and runway shows, it's clothing, products, fabulous magazine and web campaigns and of course the models themselves. A great headshot grabs the viewer and holds them. A great headshot is the tool to to launch a career, to book amazing fashion jobs, to be remembered by, it's a picture to never forget! That special photograph is very important and it's the photographer and their team working together with the model that creates that unforgettable image. Which is why you need a photographer who understands what fashion and modelling is all about. Scroll down for my Top Tips!

So what are my Top Tips?

Find your angle –
left side right side, up or down. No two people are the same so as a photographer you need to find the angle that works for them. As a model it is helpful to know what angle works for you; this can help deliver better shots faster – but don't get too locked in; many photographers can find something new, a new you by changing the angle. So know what works but be ready to experiment too.

Get close -
there's a reason it's called a headshot! While the trends go from head and neck to mid chest; the classic headshot really is just the head. If you have great bone structure and well proportioned features with great symmetry, closer will work well for you. If your key look is your body, a longer shot may work better. Photographers, going in super close means it's time to change that wide angle for a telephoto, which is generally a much more flattering focal length to work with on a headshot.

It's you but it's not really a portrait -
This would have to be one of the most confusing and perhaps difficult to realise aspects of model headshot photography. This is a portrait but it needs to go into the fashion zone, the modelling zone and not the mum / dad / friends love me zone. And honestly it is something many photographers clearly don't get and many aspiring models too. If you are serious about being in the fashion industry you need to be in alignment with fashion. Wacky, “fun” or party-time with people cut out photographs just won't cut it. Go to the BIG modelling agency websites and look at the model portfolios online. Yes you can do that. See what they use – this is what you need.

Work with the best you can -
Which also means spend some money.. If you are yet to land an agent the easiest way to get a great headshot is to book a photographer that knows what they are doing! Yes you can go down the Gumtree/Facebook/Craigslist path but you may very well be wasting your time and end up with pictures that do not show your true potential – and that is a wrong turn that can easily be avoided. Cut to the chase; do your research, find a fashion or beauty photographer who shoots model portfolios; email them, book them – done!

Do a full portfolio shoot with a few headshots -
As a photographer photographing new talent, I like to work on headshots across a full portfolio photoshoot of three to five looks. Simply because everyone hits their peak on a shoot at a different point or with a different look. Working on headshots across the photoshoot allows for more choices once the shoot is done.  Yes you may end up with the tough – too many good shots to choose from problem, but I just call that the good problem and more shots to choose from is a great place to be.

So that's it; fashion and photography change all the time, but even as they change some things remain the same. The importance of a great headshot! And if you like what you see here, drop me a line to book your headshot photoshoot. www.kentjohnsonphotography.com.au/ModellingPortfolios.htm

My Equipment and a Photography Portfolio for Shotkit!

A few week back, no a few months back.. Mark from Shotkit approached me to see if I would like to be part of his website that highlights photographers work; and the photography equipment, the 'shotkit' they use to produce their photographs. Now while I have largely shied away from all sorts of gear-porn, I do love the shotkit website and what Mark has done with it. And having subscribed I was enjoying seeing the photography and the kits of photographers from all around the world. So in a nutshell I said yes to the request to take part, did the kit shots; AND a pretty fabulous story about the kit(s) I use; my writing really is improving all the time, even if I do say so myself! I also put to together a  much larger selection of pictures for Shotkit than they were ever going to be able to run, but hey you gotta give it a go.. The post went live a few weeks back; so now I can reveal the complete series of shots I put together for the first time. SO if you want to READ all about it; you need to click this link to check out the story of my equipment too. Go on, I know you want to; and it's well worth subscribing while you are there.

Bondi Beach - Men's Fitness Style Folio Shoot.

Dawn breaks, here comes the sun, our man is ready, the grooming is done, my camera clicks, morning light, lots of fun, we are enjoying ourselves and great pictures are made. It has been way too long since I have been at Bondi at the crack of dawn. For this photo shoot, the first booked through my Instagram @Model_Portfolios I had a great time photographing the very fit and toned Scott from Peak Altitude Training. Great natural light, yes you need an early start but you just can't fake it! Thanks Scott, and thanks Tara for a great job with the grooming.
